DeafKidz Joins Deaf Role Model Day in East Sussex

On 3rd October 2025, DeafKidz International was delighted to take part in a Deaf Role Model Day at Willingdon Primary School in East Sussex.

The event, organised by Gaea Thompson, Teaching Assistant at Willingdon Primary, brings together deaf children from across East Sussex once a term. It offers a supportive space for children to make friends, learn together, and be inspired by Deaf role models who share their experiences.

Representing DeafKidz International was our Global Ambassador, Caroline Palmer, joined by her son Alfie, who is a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult), and her interpreter, Yolanda.

The session started with the children participating in a lively BSL scavenger hunt, encouraging teamwork, fun, and communication in sign language.

Caroline then spoke to the group about her experiences growing up as a Deaf person, sharing stories about learning BSL, using hearing aids, and the importance of understanding and support from family and friends. The children were very engaged, asking thoughtful questions and showing great curiosity about what life was like for Caroline when she was their age.

After a short break, Caroline talked about her role as a DeafKidz International Global Ambassador, introducing the charity’s work to protect and empower deaf children around the world. She helped the children understand that while they have access to education and communication support in the UK, many deaf children globally still face significant barriers to safety and inclusion.

It was a wonderful day filled with learning, laughter, and inspiration. We’re so grateful to Gaea and the team at Willingdon Primary School for the invitation, and we look forward to working together again in the future to continue inspiring and empowering deaf children across East Sussex.
